Dynamic Duo: Mustang GT and CTS-V Coupe (photos)

Two excellent examples of American muscle were on display at the 2010 Detroit auto show: the 2011 Ford Mustang GT and the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe. The Mustang may have the legend, but the CTS-V has the power.

2011 Ford Mustang GT

Although the Mustang got a major update for the 2010 model year, Ford gave the GT another boost for 2011 with an improved V-8 and GT badging. The hood in this GT gets an extra bulge, denoting the big powerplant underneath.

2011 Ford Mustang GT

The real improvement to the Mustang GT was a new 5-liter V-8 engine that produces 412 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. But Ford notes that this big engine also gets 25 mpg on the highway through the use of variable valve timing on each camshaft and electric power steering, which takes some load off of the engine.

Although it still uses a solid rear axle, Ford fits the Mustang GT with a limited slip differential and rear control arms to improve handling.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe

The Cadillac CTS-V Coupe introduced at the show is another exemplary work of American muscle. It uses much of the same running gear as the CTS-V sedan, but in the new coupe body.

The coupe body on the CTS-V is particularly dramatic, and goes well with this car's 556 horsepower, produced from its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine.

The CTS-V Coupe can be had with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The cabin also includes the excellent navigation system and stereo found in the standard CTS.
