Dragon Con: Costumes come to play (pictures)
As Crave's Christopher MacManus continues to explore the chambers of the multi-genre Dragon Con, he witnesses some amazing costumery based on characters from video games, comic books, sci-fi, and so on. Check out these superstars from the show.
Beam me up, Scotty
ATLANTA -- Believe it or not, you're not looking at the late James Doohan, better known as Scotty (Montgomery Scott) from the original "Star Trek" television show and movies, but rather a costumer named Larry Robertson posing as the iconic sci-fi character at Dragon Con.
The annual event, spread across multiple convention-size hotels, draws in tens of thousands of people to Georgia's capital and has become somewhat of a mecca for cosplay -- the act of wearing a costume and changing your appearance to match a character from any geeky genre, ranging from video games, comic books, movies, and more. Click on through our gallery to see some amazing costume creations, and don't miss our gallery of cosplay from the first day of the 2013 Dragon Con.
War Master
The towering War Master, created by Hex Mortis Design Studio, impressed onlookers with its darkened, post-apocalyptic aesthetics.
Steampunk Tetris
A group of friends amused Dragon Con visitors with this unique steampunk-inspired Tetris set. Fortunately, they didn't disintegrate whenever they formed a line.
X-Men - Onslaught
Jason Prestridge's Onslaught (from the X-Men universe) entranced those who looked at him with a set of mysterious glowing eyes. He wanted to make sure his bracers and claws were visible in the shot.
Space Ghost
Space Ghost and his lady friend bring some retro cool to a costume contest at Dragon Con.
Half Life - Gordon Freeman
George Galloway, portraying Gordon Freeman, brought some Half Life love to Dragon Con. Watch out for that crowbar!
Borderlands
Borderlands, a popular subject for cosplayers at Dragon Con, was represented beautifully by A Girl From Mars and friends. They even included a Portal-skinned character for complete nerdiness!
League of Legends
League of Legends was mildly popular as a costume subject at Dragon Con, including this Subterranean Nautilus and friends.
Poison Ivy
You better watch out for the allure of Poison Ivy, who wowed the audience of a costume contest at Dragon Con with her unique dress. The skeleton stayed hidden until Poison's robe came off, which surprised the crowd.
The Avengers
Richard and Amanda Davis, a North Carolina couple who run Nerdvana Comix and heavily participate with The Browncoat Pub & Theatre, came to Dragon Con as Black Widow and Hawkeye from The Avengers. Fierce!
Iron Man
While Tony Stark's Iron Man may sport an arsenal of weaponry and high-tech countermeasures, but it has nothing on the steaming power of this (literal) Iron Man by Daniel Valdez.
Lego Man
Even the building brick got some love at Dragon Con -- including this very tall City Lego minifgure created by Peter Phelan.
Borderlands - Psycho Bandit
Jarman Props stunned Dragon Con visitors with this incredible Borderlands Psycho Bandit outfit complete with a fully-rotating Buzz Axe. Wicked!
Journey
The mysterious robed wanderers from the PlayStation 3 game Journey, portrayed by Brian Lee and Charlotte Moore, made a silent appearance at Dragon Con.
Spaceballs - Darth Helmet
Comb the desert! Eric Vass' hilarious "Spaceballs" inspired outfit recalls Darth Helmet's temporarily used deser gear.
Iron Woman
Forget Iron Man, because Sabrina Bykowski rocked Dragon Con as Iron Woman. Film idea much?
Dawnstar
A woman makes an angelic debut as Dawnstar during a costume contest at Dragon Con.
Daft Punk
This incredible Daft Punk-inspired cool cat, by Harrison Krix of Volpin Props, grabbed major attention at Dragon Con. Krix implemented a Wi-Fi equipped Arduino board so that he can send custom messages, patterns, and other designs to the LED-equipped helmet from his iPhone.
Sebastian Nemo
Adam Johnson's Sebastian Nemo outfit, inspired by Warmachine, grabbed my attention during Dragon Con. Johnson had an infectious smile and played the character with good charisma.
Apocalypse Avengers
A group of cosplayers reimagine the Avengers with an apocalyptic vibe at Dragon Con. Which one is your favorite?
Thor
A costumer makes a triumphant appearance as Thor during a contest at Dragon Con.
Doctor Who - Dalek
Doctor Who had a huge presence at Dragon Con, including this fun Dalek throwback by Carver Moore.
Tron Bar
A woman, posing as Siren from "Tron: Legacy," stands next to the incredible BaR2D2 remote-controlled mobile bar bot, which makes mixed liquor drinks on the fly and chills beer.
