Cadillac carries sedan styling into its newest SUV, the XT5 (pictures)
Cadillac softened its sharp-edged design for the CTS and ATS sedans, and now shows similar styling in its all-new XT5, a medium-sized SUV replacing the outgoing SRX.
LOS ANGELES -- Cadillac showed off the all-new XT5 small SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show, embracing new styling and technology in a medium SUV.
The 2017 XT5, replacing the outgoing SRX, is the first of four new SUVs in Cadillac's lineup.
These SUVs will use the softened styling seen here in the grille and fascia of the XT5, while retaining Cadillac cues such as the LED light pipes.
The new models will use the XT nomenclature, which stands for "Crossover Touring." The number designation indicates where the vehicle fits among the lineup in size.
The XT5 benefits from a new generation of GM's direct injection 3.6-liter V-6 engine, making 310 horsepower and equipped with fuel-saving technologies such as idle-stop and cylinder deactivation.
Cadillac will offer the XT5 with a new all-wheel-drive system capable of moving 100 percent of torque from front to back, depending on traction, and also using active torque vectoring to improve handling.
An adaptive suspension changes the pressure in the dampers to improve comfort and handling.
The XT5 is designed to hold five passengers and cargo, with fold-down seats for flexibility.
Translucent black trim pieces on the D-pillars give the rear glass a wrap-around look.
As a Cadillac, the XT5's interior will need to appeal to luxury buyers. A new version of Cadillac's CUE infotainment system features support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Electric power steering includes different settings for comfort and sport driving.
Cadillac minimizes the size of the drive selector for the XT5's eight-speed transmission.
Although the XT5 measures the same in exterior dimensions as the outgoing SRX, the interior has been expanded and overall weight reduced.
