BMW does not wait for the car show season to unveil its new models, releasing photos and details of the new X5 update as they became available. The new car gets some styling changes and re-engineering, but the essentials remain the same.

The new X5 represents the third generation of what BMW calls its Sports Activity Vehicle. Although not a drastic update, this X5 benefits from many newer BMW technologies. LED fog lights come standard, while adaptive LED headlights are an option.

The new X5 will be offered in the U.S. with three engines, an inline 3-liter six-cylinder, a 4.4-liter V-8, and a 3-liter six-cylinder diesel. The gasoline engines use direct injection to increase efficiency, and all have turbochargers for more power.

BMW notes that for the first time it will offer the X5 without all-wheel drive. The sDrive35i model will only drive the rear wheels. The all-wheel-drive models are designated xDrive35i, xDrive50i, and the xDrive35d, the last being the diesel model. BMW will also continue to build the M version.

Although the cabin electronics look similar to BMW's current suite, the LCD now stands up from the dashboard, rather than being integrated underneath it. Many formerly optional features now come standard. BMW not only makes navigation standard, but includes the USB port and its Apps technology.

A panoramic sunroof, a feature becoming common across the industry, lets light into the rear seat area. The rear seat entertainment feature more closely resembles tablet technology.
