Apple unveils renovated 'Cube' store
The facade of Apple's rebuilt "Cube," its flagship store in New York City, features a much cleaner look. Instead of 90 panels, the store on Fifth Avenue now has 15. The store's renovation took about five months. After closing the store at 10 p.m. ET Thursday, Apple reopened the store to the public today at 10 a.m.
The old face
Apple's Fifth Avenue store in New York City has become a sort of cathedral to Apple fans since opening in May 2006. This is the way the store looked prior to the renovation. The company reportedly spent an estimated $6.7 million on the renovation.
Apple fans line up to enter new store
The work on renovating the Cube began in June, and apparently Apple fans couldn't wait to see the results. A line of people waiting to get into the store went down the block. There were no new products on sale. People said they were just curious to see how the store changed. In typical Apple style, a cordon of Apple employees whooped it up as they greeted customers into the revamped store.
Apple is expert on glass panels
Steve Jobs, Apple's former CEO and one of the co-founders, had told the Cupertino, Calif., City Council earlier this year that the company has become very skilled at designing large glass panes. Jobs, who passed away last month at the age of 56, made his comments to the council in June when making a proposal for a new Apple headquarters.
More space and tables in the Cube
Inside the Fifth Avenue store, some of the tables featured signs reading "Personal Training." The store, which is open 24 hours, was packed following the debut of the new facade.
