New Ford Explorer Platinum pushes the SUV upscale (pictures)

2016 Ford Explorer Platinum debuts at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The new model features a revised front and rear end, but the chassis between hasn't changed much.

The V-6 and turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine options also persist, unchanged.

We weren't able to sample it at the show, but the 2016 Explorer will be the first Ford vehicle to get an all-new 500-watt Sony Audio System.

The automaker's hands-free liftgate makes an appearance on the 2016 Explorer, unlocking and raising the liftgate with a kick of a foot beneath the SUV's rear bumper.

As seen on the new Lincoln MKC, the active park assist system can now perpendicular park, parallel park, and exit a tight space by taking control of the power steering.

The previous model's 2.0-liter EcoBoost option is out, replaced with a new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine choice.

The new turbo-four will output "at least 270 horsepower and at least 300 pound-feet of torque."

The automaker expects no efficiency loss with the move to a larger, more powerful engine.

With more torque on tap, Ford has opened the availability of four-wheel drive and tow packages to four-cylinder Explorer models.

The 2016 model year marks the appearance of a new Platinum Series trim level at the top of the Explorer lineup.

The automaker hopes the more luxurious interior and exterior of the Platinum will appeal to a more upscale buyer.

With more than 7 million Explorers sold in the United States, Ford stakes the Explorer's claim as America’s best-selling SUV for 25 years.

Front and rear cameras are available on the new model and feature wide angle lenses.

At both ends, the cameras are each equipped with a spray washer to keep the lenses clear of debris.

The Platinum model is the top of the line, equipped with the most powerful, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 and nearly all of the available bells, whistles, and amenities.

Aiding highway economy, the Explorer now feature active grill shutters and ducts that create "air curtains" around the rolling wheels and tires.

The 2016 Ford Explorer goes on sale next summer.
