Kyle MacLachlan will return as Agent Cooper in new 'Twin Peaks'
"Twin Peaks" fans have been eagerly awaiting official casting news for the new series. The first big piece falls into place as Kyle MacLachlan signs on to reprise the lead role.
Pour yourself a damn fine cup of coffee. Cut a slice of cherry pie. Keep an eye on the owls. They may not be what they seem, but at least Agent Dale Cooper will be. Showtime, the cable channel that will air the new series of "Twin Peaks" in 2016, confirmed Monday that Kyle MacLachlan will be back in the role of the FBI agent known for his dapper suits, unusual investigative methods and unflappable attitude in the face of otherworldly spirits, dark forests and the occasional llama.
According to TVLine, MacLachlan made a surprise appearance at a Showtime presentation for the Television Critics Association winter press tour. He told the assembled media, "I'm very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of 'Twin Peaks.'" He followed that statement up with a genre-mashing missive: "May the forest be with you."
Further tidbits from the presentation include that production is expected to begin midway through the year in multiple locations. Showtime President David Nevins said, "I expect there to be lots of people from the original cast back."
MacLachlan had been hinting on Twitter that he would be happy to revisit the series that helped establish him as a star when it first aired in 1990. Now David Lynch has given him an official welcome-back message through Twitter.
News came out in October that "Twin Peaks" co-creators Lynch and Mark Frost would be collaborating on a new nine-episode series picking up 25 years after the original ended. It's been a long time coming, but fans hope to see some resolution to the massive cliffhanger the series left us with. Kyle MacLachlan's official confirmation heralds many more damn fine things to come.
