Ximian releases new Linux interface

Ximian, a start-up that employs the leader of one of the two major software packages used to put a friendly face on the Linux operating system, released a new version of its software on Tuesday. Version 1.4 of Ximian's software is based on the latest version of the Gnome desktop user interface, the company said. Ximian Gnome 1.4 includes Red Carpet, software for installing software updates more easily; the Mozilla Web browser; the Nautilus file manager from Eazel; the MonkeyTalk system for getting support from Ximian personnel; and the Gnome Doorman step-by-step system for helping computer users set up their desktop software. Gnome competes chiefly with KDE, another system that controls graphical features such as menus, windows or fonts as well as deeper functions such as copying and pasting. Ximian was co-founded by Miguel de Icaza, leader of the Gnome effort.
