Xbox gamers can now download a companion app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that lets you check out your achievements, dress up your Xbox Live avatar and send messages to your Xbox friends.

The app is called My Xbox Live, and also lets you compare achievements with other Xbox Live gamers, and send friend invites. D'aww.

The app is free and out now. It requires iOS version 4.3 or later.

Released alongside the new Xbox Live dashboard, the app certainly comes as a surprise -- it looks exactly like a Windows Phone app, right down to the Metro-style tiled interface and the on-screen icons along the bottom.

The app isn't as comprehensive as the Windows Phone Xbox Companion app, which lets you control movie and music playback on your Xbox from your smart phone.

Microsoft's certainly putting up a competitive front right now. With Nokia's Lumia 800 proving a great Windows Phone, new video offerings on Xbox and Windows 8 coming next year, Microsoft is gearing up for war.

With this new Xbox app so obviously styled to look like Windows Phone, we wonder if it's another slightly cheeky attempt to win iOS users over to the Microsoft camp. The move won't have slipped under Apple's radar though -- the Cupertino tech giant must approve every app before allowing it on to the App Store.

What do you think of Microsoft's prospects? Can it topple Apple? Tell us in the comments, or on our Facebook wall.

Update: If you're having trouble logging into the app, go to xbox.com, sign in and agree to the new terms and conditions. Then log in to the app on your phone.
