Apple confirms WWDC 2016 developers conference begins June 13
Apple announces dates for this year's developer conference in San Francisco, confirming what we learned earlier from the company's own digital assistant.
It seems Siri knows what she's talking about, at least when it comes to when Apple's annual developers conference will be held.
Apple said Monday that its Worldwide Developers Conference will officially kick off in San Francisco on Monday, June 13, and run through Friday, June 17. That announcement confirmed the answer you get if you ask Apple's personal digital assistant on the iPhone or iPad.
The announcement hinted at some of the products that will be discussed at the conference.
"WWDC 2016 is going to be a landmark event for developers who are coding in Swift, and building apps and products for iOS, OS X, watchOS and tvOS," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said in a statement.
The keynote address will be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, while the rest of the conference's sessions will take place at the Moscone West convention center, as it has in past years.
Following its standard playbook, expect Apple at the event to unveil the first official details on its next generation of operating systems for the full range of its hardware empire -- most notably iOS 10 for iPhones and iPads and the successor to the current El Capitan version of OS X for Macs. We may also hear about new features and improvements coming to WatchOS, the software behind the Apple Watch.
While the event remains targeted at app developers and software partners, the opening keynote from CEO Tim Cook is sometimes used as a launchpad for new Apple products and services, such as the big unveiling of Apple Music at last year's event. But with the iPhone SE and new iPad Pro having just been launched, don't be surprised if minor Mac refreshes are the only new items Apple shows off at the event -- if, indeed, there's any new hardware on display at all. (The presumed iPhone 7 is expected to hit in September, as is a potential Apple Watch sequel, if Apple follows its standard release schedule.)
In recent years, Apple has adopted a lottery system for those looking to attend. Eligible developers can register now through Friday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. PT to be eligible for the lottery. Apple will "will let you know your status by Monday, April 25, 5:00 p.m. PDT."
