The annual World Press Photo competition landed in Sydney this week, with an astounding range of entries from around the world, including a winning image from Australian photographer Mark Dadswell.
Over 5500 photographers entered the prestigious competition, which aims to showcase the best in photojournalism. The World Press Photo of the Year was awarded to Anthony Suau, whose photograph US Economy in Crisis depicts an armed officer moving through a house in Cleveland, Ohio, after an eviction. The overall prize includes €10,000 and a Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera.
Other striking images include an intimate photo of life on the road with the Obama campaign by Callie Shell, a gripping depiction of homelessness on Brazilian streets by Carlos Cazalis, and Mark Dadswell's photo of Usain Bolt winning the men's 200m final at the Beijing Olympics, which won the second prize in the Sports Action Singles category.
The exhibition, which is sponsored by Canon, is on display at the State Library of NSW until 31 May, and will then travel to the Brisbane Powerhouse from 6 to 28 June 2009.
