Workaround for Mac OS X 10.2.2 Alias bug

CNET staff

Yesterday we noted a bug in Mac OS X 10.2.2 that prevents folder or file aliases (and in some cases standard files or folders) from displaying a custom icon after one has already been pasted.

After making an alias of a folder, then pasting a custom icon onto the alias, you cannot put a new icon onto the alias. If you try and 'clean' the first icon off the alias by cutting and then pasting the second icon onto the alias, Mac OS X simply places the first icon back.

Matt Nevels offers a simple workaround utilizing the Terminal:

"I went into the terminal into the problem folder. I deleted the 'Icon?' file (after I had cut the old icon) and instantly I could paste the new icon properly."

It should also be noted that if you paste the second icon - and the old icon is displayed - you can log out, then back in (or restart), and the new icon will be in place.
