Workaround for APC PowerChute kernel panics under Mac OS X

If you are experiencing frequent kernel panics from power management software in conjunction with your UPS (uninterruptable power supply) device (previously noted in this MacFixIt article), the culprit may be activation the supply during system sleep.

Both APC PowerChute and BenaTong's PowerGuardian cause consistent kernel panics in Mac 10.2.6 if the UPS is activated while the computer is sleeping. MacFixIt reader Richard Kunert writes "I can cause a kernel panic in either one on my FW800 by pressing the Test button on the UPS."

The only workaround is to turn off deep sleep functionality altogether, or simply set Energy Saver (located in System Preferences) to only dim the display.
