Word and Mac OS 8 conflict

Regarding the report last time of a conflict between Word and Mac OS 8, several readers suggested that this may not be a new problem, but rather an already confirmed conflict between Word and SAM Intercept in Mac OS 8. According to Benjamin Grosser, Symantec has now acknowledged this conflict and is working on a fix. Meantime, you can likely work-around it by turning off the SAM option to scan applications on launch. If you have a problem with Word crashing at startup and you do not have SAM installed, you might also try disabling the Microsoft Office Manager control panel.
