WonderCon 2009: Paramount debuts new 'Star Trek' trailer

The new Kirk. Hmmm, I guess he has the requisite one part self assurance, two parts sleazebag going for him. Paramount Pictures

JJ Abrams (creator of "Lost" and "Alias") was on hand Saturday along with the new Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the new James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) to debut the brand new trailer for "Star Trek."

Unfortunately, I did not get a seat close to the screen, so it was difficult to make out exactly what the trailer consisted of, but for a detailed analysis, check here.

It was also tough to make out dialog with the volume of the sound system set super high, but a few choice moments I remember:

  • More of Karl Urban's dead on Deforest Kelly impression
  • A huge space battle, with the Enterprise looking like its taking quite a beating
  • A cool shot of a planet imploding
  • A great shot of a bloody, beaten Captain Kirk taking charge and sitting in the captain's chair

Speaking of which, before seeing this moment I was not buying Chris Pine as Kirk. He just looked too generic-model-pretty-boy to me. In the trailer he pulls this off with so much swagger and self-confidence I'm now at least beginning to warm up to him.

The trailer is supposed to debut Friday with " Watchmen ".
