In addition to talking about Cyberpunk 2077 today at its earnings briefing, CD Projekt announced that the Witcher series to date has sold 20 million copies and teased that developer CD Projekt Red will release a new game in 2016. This is in addition to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's Blood and Wine expansion, which is scheduled to launch later this year.

Interestingly, the unannounced CD Projekt Red game will be a "new type of video game format previously unexplored by the studio." You can see the slide from the briefing below.

DualShockers attended the call and reports that president Adam Kicinski said CD Projekt doesn't plan to talk about the nature of the unannounced game today. Also during the briefing, Kicinski teased that CD Projekt is "experimenting" and working on projects that "nobody has ever done before."

Back in 2013, CD Projekt Red announced plans to open an office in Krakow, Poland, putting the team to work there on "smaller" but "premium-quality," projects, estimated to be 20 hours in length. It is possible that one of these games is the one referenced during the presentation today.

Another slide from today's report revealed that, in addition to Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red plans to release another "AAA RPG title" in the 2017-2021 window. Kicinski declined to say anything at all about what this game might be.

2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the last game in the series to feature Geralt in the lead role. While The Witcher 4 may not be coming very soon, CD Projekt Red's Marcin Iwinski said in a previous interview that the world of The Witcher is ripe with storytelling opportunities.

"We definitely are not annualizing a franchise or anything--it's about the experience," he said about The Witcher. "The world of The Witcher is gigantic and it's great to tell these stories, but I don't know when this will happen."

There appears to be a clear business opportunity for another Witcher game, as The Witcher 3 has sold more than 6 million copies. The 20 million figure referenced earlier includes sales of The Witcher (2007), The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (2011) and The Witcher 3 (2015).
