Update: The contest is over. Please do not submit any more entries. Today's winners are Michael Riccio and John Shepard. Thanks to all who participated in these contests over the past week. I hope you enjoyed it.

Today's answers: As I discovered, there is technically more than one correct answer to each question (especially #1) and I allowed some latitude in what I accepted (I also wound up accepting 50 correct entries before closing the contest). But here are the answers I was looking for:

What the words have in common: the all contain three letters that appear consecutively in the alphabet (e.g., DEFt).

To find the thief: Take 1 object from artisan 1, 2 objects from artisan 2 and so on. Place all 210 objects on the scale. The scale should show 210 ounces if there is no thief. However, it will be off by an amount equal to 1/8 ounce times the number of the culprit's objects placed on the scale. Since each artisan has a different number of objects on the scale, you can now identify the culprit.

We're giving away the last two copies of Conflict Catcher 8 today. To have a chance at winning, you first have to correctly answer the following 2 questions:

  1. What do the following words have in common: deft, first, calmness, canopy, laughing, stupid, crabcake, hijack?
  2. Twenty artisans work for a king making gold objects, each of which is supposed to weigh exactly 1 ounce. The work of each artisan can be easily identified because each one makes a different object. It has come to the king's attention that one (and only one) of the artisans is making each of his objects with exactly 7/8 of an ounce and stealing the difference. How can the king, using only one weighing on a scale, determine who the thief is?
Hint: It is not a balance scale.

I will select the winners at random from the first 25 correct entries. If there are no correct entries, I will pick at random from the entries that are closest to correct. Entering more than once will disqualify all of your entries.

Winners will receive a fully working boxed copy of CC8. I will likely not be able to ship them until early September. I am waiting for Casady & Greene to ship the copies to me.
