WhatsApp for Windows Phone 8 out now
The popular messaging app has cruised onto Microsoft's new platform, but seems to be missing lockscreen notifications.
WhatsApp has landed on Windows Phone 8, granting owners of mobiles like the Nokia Lumia 920 or HTC 8X the chance to get involved with the popular free messaging app.
The service has already been present on Windows Phone 7.5 for a while now, but has taken its sweet time arriving on the more recent Windows Phone 8.
The app was developed in partnership with Windows Phone loyalist Nokia, which says it toiled to "produce a version that is properly optimised for the latest Windows Phone platform experience."
Sounds good, in theory at least -- but several commenters have already expressed dismay at a lack of features, with several taking to Nokia's comment section to bemoan the lack of lock screen notifications.
"Compared to the Android/iOS version, this version is just a joke," one writes. "Come on, you can do better than that."
WhatsApp recently topped Apple's free app list of 2012, though the cross-platform messaging service is only free for the first year, then there's a small ($0.99) annual charge to keep using it.
If you're annoyed at how much you end up spending on texts, WhatsApp is a good alternative, especially because it lets you message friends using different types of phones for free.
