Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Nov. 17.

Wireless and handheld devices are expected to grab the next week at one of the tech industry's largest confabs, Comdex Fall 2002. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates and Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy are among those scheduled to give keynote speeches at the event.

Hewlett-Packard's chief executive, Carly Fiorina, will also deliver a keynote address, which should make for a busy schedule: Her company reports quarterly earnings on the same day she's set to speak.

    • Agilent Technologies makes test and measurement equipment. It's expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 12 cents a share.

  • Hewlett-Packard manufacturers computers and printers, and offers professional services. The company is expected to report a fourth-quarter profit of 22 cents a share.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 19

    • Analog Devices develops high-performance integrated circuits. It's expected to post a fourth-quarter profit of 16 cents a share.

  • Portal Software develops customer management and billing software. The company is expected to report a third-quarter loss of 5 cents a share.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 20

    • C&D Technologies makes electrical-power storage and conversion products. It's expected to report a third-quarter profit of 20 cents a share.

  • Omnivision Technologies makes a chip for high-volume imaging applications. The company is expected to report a second-quarter profit of 8 cents a share.
  • Thursday, Nov. 21

    • Agile Software develops product management software. The company is expected to report a second-quarter loss of 18 cents a share.

  • Autodesk makes design software. It's expected to report a third-quarter profit of 4 cents a share.
  • Brocade Communications Systems makes switches and software for storage area networks. The company is expected to post a fourth-quarter profit of 7 cents a share.
  • TiVo is an interactive-TV company, providing software and hardware for digital video recorders. The company is expected to report a third-quarter loss of 31 cents a share.

    Monday, Nov. 18

    • Leading Economic Indicators summarizes previously reported totals for indicators such as the number of building permits and unemployment claims filed. It's expected to dip 0.3 percent for September, compared with a 0.2 percent slide in August.

    Tuesday, Nov. 19

    • Trade Balance is the total by which imported goods exceed exports. The September deficit is expected to shrink to $37.5 billion, from $38.5 billion in August.

    Wednesday, Nov. 20

    • Housing Starts is the total of new home construction projects. The October number is expected to fall to 1.71 million, from 1.84 million in September.

  • Building Permits allow developers to begin construction on a site, and are monitored as an indicator of future housing trends. Economists expect permits issued in October to decline to an annual rate of 1.7 million from 1.73 million in September. Thursday, Nov. 21
    • Initial Claims is the weekly total of new claims filed for unemployment compensation. The total is expected to rise to 400,000 for the week ended Nov. 16, from 388,000 the previous week.
