Week ahead: For the birds

It's all quiet on the tech front as even hardened geeks take a break for turkey and Thanksgiving. But watch out for a Kazaa court case and earnings from Forgent Networks and Credence Systems.

Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of Nov. 25.

We're talking turkey here. Activity for events and economic news will be rather light next week, as the nation gears up for the Thanksgiving holiday.

But despite the break, Kazaa's parent company will be busy in federal court next week, and a number of companies, from Forgent Networks to Credence Systems, will still be releasing quarterly earnings.

Monday, Nov. 25

  • A federal court in Los Angeles will hear arguments Nov. 25 over whether Kazaa's parent company, Vanuatu-based Sharman Networks can be sued in U.S. courts by the record industry and movie studios.

  • Electronic automation systems and components will be the hot topic at the SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2002 conference, which runs Nov. 26 to 28 in Nuremberg, Germany.

Monday, Nov. 25

  • Dycom Industries provides engineering, construction, and maintenance services to telecommunication providers. It's expected to report a first-quarter profit of 7 cents a share.

  • Forgent Networks offers collaboration management software and services. The company is expected to report a first-quarter loss of 7 cents a share.
  • Semtech provides analog and mixed-signal semiconductors. It's expected to report a third-quarter profit of 14 cents a share.
  • Tech Data offers IT logistics management services. The company is expected to report a third-quarter profit of 57 cents a share.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 26

    • ADE supplies inspection systems for semiconductor wafers and devices, magnetic storage and optics. It's expected to post a second-quarter loss of 18 cents a share.

  • Comarco develops wireless test solutions for field-testing laptop computers, cellular telephones, and other handheld devices. The company is expected to report a third-quarter profit of 4 cents a share.
  • Comverse Technology provides software and systems for using multimedia with communications services within a network. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 15 cents a share.
  • Credence Systems develops software for design-to-production tests of semiconductors. The company is expected to report a fourth-quarter loss of 29 cents.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 27

    • Descartes Systems Group is a logistics software provider. It's expected to report a third-quarter loss of 1 cent a share.

    Economic Reports

    Monday, Nov. 25

    • Existing Home Sales tracks housing activity. October sales of existing homes are expected to drop to 5.35 million, from 5.40 million the previous month. New home sales are expected to dip to 980,000, from just over 1 million the previous month.

    Tuesday, Nov. 26

    • Gross Domestic Product is the broadest measure of overall U.S. economic activity. Third-quarter growth is expected to rise slightly to 3.2 percent, compared with 3.1 percent in the year-ago period.

  • Consumer Confidence tracks the results of a broad survey on consumer spending expectations. The November index is expected to rise to 83, from 79.4 the previous month.
  • Wednesday, Nov. 27
    • Personal Income measures income from all sources. October growth is expected to dip to 0.2 percent, from 0.4 percent the previous month.
