Scattered trade shows, and earnings from Juniper and Infosys, should help while away the time as the tech world returns to business after the July 4 holiday.

Following are some of the notable tech-related events scheduled for the week of July 7.

There should be plenty of time to nurse those sunburns and upset tummies, as the tech world takes a breather between the Fourth of July and a slew of major earnings announcements and high-profile trade shows coming after the middle of the month.

Action this week is limited to a few midtier networking trade shows, an open-source software convention and earnings announcements by Juniper Networks and IT consultant Infosys.

  • Networking equipment giant Cisco connects with customers at its Networkers 2003 user conference, July 7 to 10 in Los Angeles.

  • O'Reilly, publisher of numerous programming books and other technical manuals, hosts the O'Reilly Open-Source Convention, July 7 to 11 in Portland, Ore. Speakers include tech luminaries Mitch Kapor and Miguel de Icaza.

    • Wireless broadband companies take center stage at WCA 2003, July 8 to 11 in Washington, D.C.
    • Learn how to work with the latest digital video technology at DV Expo East, July 8 to 11 in New York.
    • Wednesday, July 9

      • Network gurus discuss infrastructure and security ideas at the Burton Group's Catalyst Conference, July 9 to 11 in San Francisco.

      • Infosys Technologies sells IT consulting services. It's expected to report a first-quarter profit of 40 cents a share.

    • Juniper Networks sells networking equipment. It's expected to report a second-quarter profit of 2 cents a share.
    • Plumtree Software sells business applications. It's expected report a break-even second quarter.
    • Powerwave Technologies sells components for communications gear. It's expected to report a second-quarter loss of 9 cents a share.
    • Sonus Networks sells communications equipment and services. It's expected to report a second-quarter loss of 2 cents a share.

      Tuesday, July 8
      • Consumer Credit is the total level of debt held by U.S. consumers. The May total is expected to drop to $5 billion, from $10.7 billion the previous month.

      Thursday, July 10

      • Export Prices and Import Prices track changes in average prices for nonpetroleum and nonagricultural goods and provide an early clue to shifts in trade balance. No forecast for June figures.
      • Friday, July 11

        • Producer Price Index is a broad measure of the price of goods at the wholesale level. June growth is expected to be 0.4 percent, after a 0.3 percent drop the previous month.
