Western Digital announced today that it added a few entertainment and social sites to the two latest revisions in its WD TV media player family, including the WD TV Live and WD TV Live Plus.

Users will now be able to connect with their friends and family through Facebook via the media player when connected to a TV.

The WD TV Live Plus can now also instantly stream rented or purchased movies through Blockbuster's Video On Demand service. All of these new features are made available via a firmware update; it will also add the following features:

  • Deezer support: a personalized on-demand music service with some 7 million tracks.

  • Support for Flingo, which has free Internet television from leading studios, TV networks, and video Web sites.

  • Access to AccuWeather, a worldwide weather forecasting service.

  • USB wireless keyboard support. Users can plug in any popular wireless keyboard that has a USB dongle and use it to do tasks that require lots of typing with the player, such as Facebook status updates or video searches.

The update is live now and will be delivered to players that are connected to the Internet automatically. Offline updates via USB drives will be made available in a few days.
