Warning! Palm OS 3.5 upgrade may permanently damage your Palm

CNET staff
We have a few reports of serious problems with installing the Palm OS 3.5 upgrade: David Bean writes: "It failed on my Palm IIIx. The Palm now appears frozen and won't even turn off." Michael Genzuk states: "I tried to upgrade my Palm Vx running the MacPac with no success. The upgrade will pause/hang during the upgrade process and not complete the entire upgrade." An article on Applelust.com claims that Palm technical support has confirmed these problems, stating: "Upgrading on a machine that has already been flashed once involves a high risk of burning out your ROM." On the plus side, Micheal Genzuk notes: "The upgrade is free for the Vx model ($15.00 for everyone else)." Update: a work-around Eric Johnston writes: "If you kill your machine (like I did) with OS 3.5, you may still be able to Flash back to OS 3.3. It's still available on Palm's web site. I downloaded it and got my machine working properly again." We'll be posting more info on this OS update tomorrow.
