Walgreens amps up EV plan, will add 800 chargers
Automotive News reports on Walgreens' plans to add chargers for electric vehicles at its stores.
In addition to filling a prescription, picking up some shampoo, or grabbing a candy bar, a Walgreens customer will now be able to charge a Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Volt while shopping.
The nation's largest drugstore chain announced that it will install about 800 charging stations outside stores in several major markets, including New York, Boston, Chicago, and Washington, by year's end.
"According to the Department of Energy, Walgreens will make up as much as 40 percent of all public EV charging stations across the country," Mark Wagner, Walgreens president of community management and operations, said in a statement.
Around 60 chargers already have been installed outside stores in Chicago, the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and Houston, the company said.
350Green, a company that produces EV chargers, will provide 425 of the units to Walgreens, The New York Times reported last month.
Tim Mason, 350Green's CEO, told the paper the company would charge $3 to $4 for a 90-minute charge at a Walgreens.
