The high-performance Volkswagen Golf R is returning to the United States in early 2012. Jonathan Browning, Volkswagen Group of America's CEO, said last week that the R model will have a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 256 hp. It went on sale in Europe a year ago.

A high-performance Golf--the R32--was sold in the United States for one year as a 2004 model. A VW spokesman said about 5,000 R32s were sold. A second appearance came in the 2007-08 model years and was based on the fifth-generation Golf. It had a 3.2-liter V-6 engine with 240 hp. The 2008 Golf R32 sold for about $30,000.
