Vivint security brings voice control to the forefront at CES

Vivint is harnessing the power of Alexa -- the brains behind Amazon's smart Echo speaker -- to bring voice control functionality to its security platform.

Up until this point, integration with Amazon's Echo has been limited to one-off products. While the Wi-Fi-enabled speaker works with a variety of DIY smart home devices, ranging from Philips Hue LEDs to Belkin WeMo products and other standalone accessories, it hasn't ever worked with an entire suite of professional security products.

Vivint is changing that. Subscribers will supposedly have the option to add an Amazon Echo to the Vivint platform and use Alexa to monitor and make changes to connected door locks, thermostats, lights, garage door openers, as well as Vivint's larger security system.

That means you should be able to tell Alexa to arm your security system, pull up a live feed from a specific security camera, close the garage door and much more -- all made possible through Amazon's Alexa Skills Kit, a software developer kit that allows for new and advanced integrations.

The divide between professional security firms and DIY products has become increasingly blurred as brands such as ADT, AT&T and now Vivint bring smart home devices from names such as Nest, Samsung and Yale into the fold. Vivint's voice control announcement is just the latest iteration, but it does provide further proof that inclusivity is gaining momentum in the smart home security and automation space.

Vivint hasn't announced availability for this integration just yet, but we'll be sure to share updates as soon as we learn more. In the meantime, check out the Vivint Ping, a new security camera that was also announced at CES today. Ping has a built-in button so you can contact folks registered to the same Vivint account without having to use a mobile app.
