Visioneer PaperPort Patch: upgrade or downgrade?

Regarding the patch to fix a PaperPort software conflict with Mac OS 8.5 (as previously reported here):

Several readers (including Dave Kupiec and Micky Witztum ) have noted that the patch actually installs an older version of the ScanDirectMenuINIT. "Specifically, it installs version 5.0.2, while the current version that it replaced was 5.1." The 5.1 version is moved to the Trash during the installation of the patch. Both readers also found that certain features (such as using F12 to invoke their scanner) no longer worked after installing this "update." Other problems were also noted; some could be remedied by reordering the load order of ScanDirectMenuINIT (you'll have to experiment here).
