Good news, Internet fans -- Virgin's about to drag the UK kicking and screaming into the 21st century, by rolling out a 100Mbps broadband service this year, as well as extending its 200Mbps pilot service to a wider area.
Virgin reckons the 100Mbps service will be 24 times faster than the average speed offered by other ISPs, and will allow users to download a music album in around 5 seconds, an hour-long TV show in 31 seconds, and a high-definition movie in 1 hour and 44 minutes.
Having started in Kent last year, the 200Mbps pilot service will be extended to hand-picked Virgin customers in the Coventry area. Well, you've got to make living there tolerable somehow, haven't you?
The 100Mbps package will be available to the general public in select areas covered by Virgin's fibre-optic network, although the exact locations and pricing haven't yet been confirmed. We're quietly optimistic it won't break the bank, though. Virgin launched its 50Mbps broadband package at £35 per month, when taken with an £11-per-month Virgin phone line -- and £46 per month without. That price has since fallen to a more manageable £28 per month when taken with an £11-per-month Virgin phone line, or £38 without.
