Verizon iPhone sales rumored to be underwhelming

The BGR blog gets its hands on sales data from five Apple stores showing the brand-new Verizon iPhone barely outselling the 8-month old AT&T iPhone.

The Verizon iPhone launch at stores last week came and went rather quietly . Lines were short to nonexistent at Apple and Verizon stores, though we still don't know how many phones were sold over the first few days. Verizon said it plans to sell more than 10 million iPhones by the end of the year.

We still don't have official totals, but we do have one purported snapshot of what launch sales looked like at a handful of Apple stores. Boy Genius Report says it snagged some data from someone at Apple who said sales of the Verizon iPhone are "performing a little under" the two companies' expectations. If true, the following is more than "a little" underwhelming, considering the long wait by Verizon customers to get the iPhone, and the vociferous threats by unhappy AT&T customers about jumping to Verizon.

Below are unit sales totals from five Apple stores combined (including two very, very prominent Apple stores) showing both Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4 sales during the Verizon iPhone's first five days of availability:

Thursday: Verizon = 909, AT&T = 539
Friday: Verizon = 916, AT&T = 680
Saturday: Verizon = 660, AT&T = 471
Sunday: Verizon = 796, AT&T = 701
Monday: Verizon = 711, AT&T = 618

Online preorders, which were available to Verizon customers starting Feb. 3, were assumed to have gone well when Verizon had to cut off sales by that evening because it sold out of the devices it had available for preorder . BGR says it was told by this same source that 550,000 Verizon iPhones were sold during the preorder period that day.

BGR also has some interesting stats on who bought Verizon iPhones from the five Apple stores in question: 30 percent were owners of Android phones, 25 percent owned a Blackberry, 14 percent were AT&T iPhone converts, and the rest didn't answer or didn't have a smartphone previous to standing in line.

Even if true, this is just one glimpse of five of the more than 230 Apple Stores selling the Verizon iPhone, and it doesn't include any Verizon store data.

Apple did not reply to a request for comment.
