Utility for listing and mounting peripheral devices, a follow-up

CNET staff
Last time, we queried whether there was a utility (freeware or inexpensive shareware) that would list and attempt to mount all SCSI and IDE devices. Bonus points would be given if it also worked with USB and FireWire devices. Readers offered many suggestions. None was perfect.

And the Oscar goes to.... [oops, I am still recovering from last night's 4 hour marathon].

Overall, the champ was Apple's own Drive Setup. It is really more of a disk formatting utility, but it did the job: listing and (when possible) capable of mounting all SCSI and IDE devices. Most other suggested utilities were either available only with the purchase of a commercial product, listed only hard drives (not CD-ROM drives or other non-writable devices), or both. No utility listed USB devices. I could not check about FireWire, but no one sent a utility that claimed to list FireWire devices.

Runner up: a utility from Intech Software called Peripheral View. It lists all SCSI and IDE devices, even informing you whether an IDE device is a Master or Slave device. However, it cannot be used to mount devices.
