USB Support Restart Bug: Printer Sharing involved? Regarding our previous report of a USB Support Restart glitch, Bennett Stowers replies: "I had this problem show up on my computer after USB Printer Sharing was installed. USB 1.4.1 wasn't the problem. Disabling USB Printer Sharing stopped the problem." Reader report on Speed Download Regarding the recently released Speed Download, Dennis Monken found that it had no effect on his Power Mac 4400 (with a 56K modem) until after he installed a Newer G3 400MHz upgrade. Then: "Jackpot! I cranked it up to 8 'Ports to Open' and left the buffer Size at 32 (default is 2 Ports and 32 Buffer). She shot up from 2.8 to 3.5 speeds to 8.8 to 10.5." However, switching to any other application while downloading quickly brought the speed down to earth again, sometimes bringing it to a complete halt. Date reset and Instant Palm problem As you may be aware, if you use the Reset button on an iBook or a new PowerBook G3, you lose the current date and time (it defaults back to 1904). J. Curt Broskey found an added problem that may occur if you forget to re-enter the correct date and time: Instant Palm extension will crash on startup. At least that's what happened to Curt until he got rid of the 1904 date setting. Update: Derek Taylor replies: "One other interesting by-product of having the date set back to 1904 is that SSL secure Web sites will not be encrypted. I guess the browsers assume that the web hadn't been invented yet, and you really don't need to be shopping online." SoundJam skipped tracks related to CharisMac extensions? Andy Smith writes: "I was having a skipping problem with the latest SoundJam version, where it could only play a split second of each track, then it would scan the CD for another track, play it for another split second, etc. While adding a newly purchased CDRW, I disabled CharisMac's AutoCache and CD-ROM extensions (V1.20) and bingo, SoundJam works great again. Notes on Casady & Greene's Forums suggest that others were also having these skips." Need some basic troubleshooting advice online? Check out Apple's Basic Troubleshooting area.
