Unwanted audio alerts when changing font styles

How to eliminate the audible intrusions.

CNET staff

Some users have reported a problem in which, after installing a new font, audio alerts occur when trying to change the style to bold, italic, etc.

This is a relatively simple problem with the installation of fonts that mainly occurs when users transfer fonts from one computer to another. After installing some fonts, especially those which have separate files for bold, italic, and other styles, when attempting to change some text to one of the styles using keyboard commands (e.g.: Command-B for bold) the computer outputs the system error sound and wont change the font. The only way to change the style is to use the fonts panel (use the command-T keyboard combination) to manually select the desired style. Upon checking and validating the font in Font Book, everything seems to be normal.

Fix

This is a result of the font files being installed to different locations. If the file that contains the "regular" style for the font is in a different location than the files that contain the "bold" or "italic" styles, the computer will not be able to locate them when trying to access them from within a program. The fonts folders available to a user are located in these folders:

  • /System/Library/Fonts/
  • /Library/Fonts/
  • ~/Library/Fonts/ (the library in the user's home folder)

Ensure all font files for a specific font are in the same location (either of these folders, but not split between them), and then re-launch the programs you are using.
