Universal version (4.5.1) of TechTool Pro announced; Public beta available

Micromat has released a long-awaited update to its diagnostic/repair utility for Mac OS X, TechTool Pro. The new release, version 4.5.1 is the first Universal Binary (Intel-based Mac-compatible) version of the application.

A Micromat press release states:

"All of the features of the program that were previously available for PowerPC based Macs will now be available for Intel-based Macs as well. This includes the innovative eDrive (emergency startup partition) feature of the program, found nowhere else. In addition to Universal Binary support, the new release will also include some significant program enhancements, including improved Disk Controller test routines."

TechTool Pro 4.5.1 will ship on a DVD capable of booting both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs. Unfortunately, Micromat is not offering a downloadable updater from earlier versions and is instead selling a DVD update for US$25.

The new release will begin shipping in early July 2006, but a public beta of TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is now available for current owners of TechTool Pro 4.
