Unifying OS 9 and OS X Desktops: a tip

Regarding the information posted in Ted Landau's Mysteries of the Desktop article, Mychailo Toloczko offers this tip:

I have found a very useful method to integrate the desktops that was not discussed in the article. This integration method is most useful for that person who has either just one partition with both X and 9 installed on it, or 2 partitions, one with X and one with 9. The essence of the integration is to replace the "Desktop" folder in the OS X user's home directory with an alias of the OS 9 "Desktop Folder" with the name of the alias changed to "Desktop". With this trick, the user sees the same items on their Desktop whether they are booted into X or 9. I've been using this trick for a year now, and I have not had a single problem with it. Here's how I did it:

  1. From within OS X, change all the hidden files to visible using a program such as TinkerTool.
  2. After making everything visible, in the root directory of the HD, there will be a folder called "Desktop Folder." Make an alias of this folder.
  3. Reset the hidden files to invisible.
  4. Boot into 9, find the "Desktop" folder in your OS X home directory and move all the items out of it that you wish to keep.
  5. Delete that "Desktop" folder.
  6. Move the "Desktop Folder" alias into your home directory and rename it to "Desktop."
  7. Move the items you had taken out of the "Desktop" folder into the "Desktop Folder" folder alias.
  8. The OS 9 and OS X Desktops will now be the same.
