Unexpected quits due to "Creating more than one Application" (iMovie '08 fails to launch)

We've received reports of an issue where certain applications (iMovie in this case) repeatedly unexpectedly quits, generating the following entry in the crash log (for more information about reading crash reports, see this tutorial):

• "Application Specific Information: *** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Creating more than one Application'

We've been experiencing a similar issue in-house, and there are two potential solutions:

• Apply the iLife Support 8.1.1 update and iMovie 7.1 update. Try this first.
• Failing the above, create a new user account per our tutorial. If iMovie successfully launches under the new user account, you can migrate your information to it as is also described in the tutorial.
