UMAX VistaScan problems: a reader offers an explanation and solution

Regarding our continuing coverage (see one and two) of problems with the software for UMAX scanners, especially the control strip module, Joe Miramonti writes: Using MacsBug I was able to identify the cause of the #1010 error problem when using the UMAX control strip (and VistaScan) on 6100, 7100, and 8100 computers. The root cause is that the newer versions 3.5.2 and 3.5.3 are linked to use of DriverServicesLib, which is recommended by Apple for compatibility with future system software. The trouble is that on NuBus based Mac's (6100, 7100, & 8100) this library will not load since it requires a PCI bus. Without MacsBug installed, this problem shows up later as a #1010 or similar error indicating for example that there is a 'bad' library or that a code fragment did not load. The current workaround is to remove any 3.5.2 or newer components, and then go back to install the 3.5.1 version (vscan2200.sea.hqx) of the software. By doing this, I have had no further problems with my Astra 2200 scanner except that the light does not turn off automatically. Brian Best similarly confirms that his problems with VistaScan 3.6.1 were solved by downgrading to version 3.5.1. Still, we have had reports of problems linked to VSControlStrip even with version 3.5.1 (see this item for example). And some readers have reported success with version 3.5.2. I guess it is time to give up on this matter for now - until UMAX offers a definitive resolution. In the meantime, you have a number of possible work-arounds to try. Hopefully, one will work for you.
