UMAX VistaScan conflict: a follow-up

Following up on the UMAX VistaScan conflict mentioned last time, we received several reader replies. In brief:

• The problem may be similar to a Mac OS 8.5 glitch reported in other programs (such as Quicken and Photoshop). The consistent work-around is to click-and-hold, rather than just click.
• However, according to some reports, the problem exists in Mac OS 8.1 as well.
• The new UMAX VistaScan 3.1 update does fix the problem reported last time. And it adds a whole new interface as well.
• The Update is now available in 10 4Mb segments, for downloading over dial-up connections. However, as of this morning, it was still available only at the UK site. UMAX's driver download form still takes you to version 2.4.3.
