Twitter said to be tossing 'Twitter for Mac' app

The rumor mill is heated up with chatter that Twitter is throwing the Twitter for Mac app under the bus. Apparently the social network is planning to stop all development and future updates on the app, according to TechCrunch.

Tech reporter MG Siegler announced earlier today, via Twitter no less, that, "Word is that Twitter made the call today: Twitter for Mac is done. They won't kill it outright, but no further updates. Goodbye, old friend."

There actually hasn't been much done to the app for some time now -- the last update was in June 2011 -- but officially ceasing all activity does seem like the end of an era.

According to Siegler, the app won't completely disappear into the abyss but rather no new features will be added. This is significant because it means the app will eventually lose compatibility with Mac's OS.

Since the app hasn't been updated in so long, it already doesn't support the new Retina MacBook Pro or Mountain Lion's notification system. According to 9to5Mac, a Retina version of Twitter for Mac was completed but then later "shelved." It's unclear why.
