The new service was announced in a blog post. It's primarily aimed at large corporations with a global reach that want to promote offers or services to a small subset of their audience based on geographic location or device type.

Like previous promoted tweets, advertisers only pay when users interact or engage with the tweet in question. Tweets can be targeted on a country level, or, within the US, on a regional level.

Now global brands that have different launch dates for several countries can send tailored messages at different times, customised for the users in each country. Mobile app providers who only want to reach customers on one device can do so without also sending the message to desktop users.

Companies that have already tested the location-based promoted tweet include British Airways, Coca Cola and The Washington Post.
