Twitter for Mac gets Retina display support and renewed commitment

After nearly two years of neglect, Twitter has finally refreshed its Mac desktop application with a few new features.

Thursday, the company released a Mac app with simplified photo-sharing options, support for Retina displays, and 14 new languages.

"Now Twitter is even more vibrant and detailed on the highest resolution Mac notebooks," Ben Sandofsky, product lead, wrote about the Retina addition. "With this update, Tweets will be clearer and sharper, creating a more vivid experience."

The enhanced application and accompanying blog post, which promises additional improvements, should allay some concerns around the application's imminent end. Last year, a widely spread rumor suggested that the information network had decided to halt all development on Twitter for Mac.

So, just how committed is Twitter to the application that it had left to collect dust since 2011? When reached for comment, a Twitter spokesperson said, "We don't have anything specific to share in regards to future plans for the app."

Sandofsky, however, was a bit more forthcoming. The product lead announced Thursday via Twitter that he was now focused on the Mac app full time.

At least one person is pleased by Twitter's renewed commitment to the Mac app. Loren Brichter, the creator of Tweetie, tweeted his approbation from the Twitter for Mac application. Twitter for Mac owes its origins to Tweetie, a popular desktop client the information network acquired from Brichter's Atebits in April 2010.
