Twitter acquires gear-sharing site Bagcheck

Bagcheck co-founder Sam Pullara will join the engineering team, but Twitter says it's too soon to say whether Bagcheck will be incorporated into the social network.

Twitter has acquired small gear-sharing start-up Bagcheck, the companies announced today.

Bagcheck, which was founded by Sam Pullara and Luke Wroblewski, is a social network designed for gadget lovers who want to tell others about the products they use and why. Users aren't required to share only tech-related "bags," though, so anyone can discuss just about anything they use in their daily lives. And they do--members discuss everything from digital cameras to cooking utensils on the site.

Bagcheck will continue to be available for the time being, but "that could change in the future," a Twitter spokesperson told CNET in an e-mailed statement. Those who are concerned with the future of the site can export their bags, the company said.

In addition to acquiring Bagcheck, Twitter will be adding Pullara to its engineering team. Wroblewski won't be joining Twitter, but plans to start "working on the next big thing."

Over the past year, Twitter has been quite busy with acquisitions. In December, the social network "acquired" personnel from Q&A start-up Fluther. In May, the company bought Twitter client TweetDeck for a reported $40 million in cash and stock. Just last month, the social network acquired social-media analysis company BackType .

Terms of Twitter's Bagcheck deal were not disclosed. The Twitter spokesperson also wouldn't comment on what the social network has planned for Bagcheck, saying that "it's too soon at this point to share any details on how and whether Bagcheck will be incorporated into Twitter."
