For various reasons, some users express frustration at not being able to turn off the Mac start-up tone. While there are some third-party Mac OS X customization applications floating around that include an option for this, the most unobtrusive (and least memory consuming) solution may have been found.

Although it is still in beta, reports from users implementing Arcana Research's Freeware "StartupSound.prefPane 1.1b2" are that it works great (for both PPC Macs and Intel Macs). A simple checkbox appears in your System Preferences that allows you to turn off/on your Mac's start-up sound, saving you from the previously unavoidable awkwardness of turning your computer on in a meeting or class.
