TurboTax saving user passwords: a follow-up

CNET staff
Not only Fidelity customers are affected by TurboTax grabbing passwords. (See previous). A TD Waterhouse customer sent us a copy of a letter he received explaining that TurboTax may have saved his password when he downloaded his 1099 data, and consequently Waterhouse was asking their customers to select a new password before logging on. The letter goes into more detail about the problem, including info on when it happened. An excerpt from the letter states:

"The situation occurred on data imported between January 31 and March 4, 2001. It also affects you if you imported data after March 4, but did not update your desktop version of TurboTax after March 4. This does not affect you if you updated your software after March 4th."

We recommend users who are not certain if they have the latest release of TurboTax to check for an update. (Thanks, Randy Chevrier)
