Could it be that one of the world's most (self-)celebrated tweeters actually sniffs at technology?
There has much much friction in the Donald Trump campaign precisely because the candidate doesn't carry a cell phone and won't use email, according to a Bloomberg report.
This has apparently led to those who do avail themselves of these modern tools to have more sway over what the campaign emits.
There has reportedly been friction among the campaign bigwigs. Indeed, on Monday, Trump announced he had, um, fired campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
The thought that Trump doesn't carry a phone is odd. After all, he tweets both from a Samsung phone and from an iPhone. (Even though he called for a ban on all Apple products, because the company was refusing to hack a terrorist's phone on behalf of the FBI.)
Trump did tell CNN's Anderson Cooper that he "writes" his own tweets.
"During the day, I'm in the office, I just shout it out to one of the young ladies who are tremendous," he told Cooper. "I have tremendous office staff. And Meredith and some of the people that work for me. And I'll just shout it out, and they'll do it. But during the evenings, after 7 o'clock or so, I will always do it by myself."
So whose phone might he use? Or does he simply not carry his phone with him and merely leaves it at home?
The Trump campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Some might chuckle at the notion that Trump may not carry a phone or use email. Those of caustic temperament will suggest that he doesn't actually want anything he communicates to be recorded and subsequently used against him.
There again, it's not as if he would be alone among the power elite in disdaining email. As Justice Elena Kagan revealed, Supreme Court justices don't use email either.
For the Trump campaign, though, technology is vital in organizing a general election campaign that has many and varied demands.
It could be, of course, that the candidate does use email but under a different name -- for example, John Miller.
Or it could be that we'll never really know, until several members of his staff decide to write books that reveal the full entertainment inside one of the more alluring and lurid campaigns in American political history.
