Troubleshooting the PowerBook G4 17": Popping noise

CNET staff

We are starting to receive several complaints of "popping noise" generated by the PowerBook G4 17". MacFixIt reader Paul Gary accurately describes the problem:

"When the initial chime starts, there is a noticeable 'pop' sound. Between 26 and 33 seconds into the boot process, another 'pop' is heard. At the 1.04 minute mark into the boot, another audible "pop" sound is heard. This pop sound is not heard from the supplied OS boot cd/dvd when it is used to boot the machine.

"Strangely enough, once the machine is running, if you are running off the battery and plug-in the power supply cord, the pop sound is heard when plugging in the cord. These 'pops' are heard with and without the battery installed and with the sound level on and off."
