Troubleshooting the PowerBook G4 17" 1.33 GHz: USB drop-off

Several readers have now confirmed a problem with some PowerBook G4 17" 1.33 GHz units. Reader Tom Neveu writes:

"I'm hoping you can ask any of your readers who have purchased the new 17" 1.33 Ghz Powerbook if they are having any problems with the USB ports not working or dropping off. I just sent mine back to Apple for a replacement unit."

All indications are that this is a hardware problem. Users have tried re-installing Mac OS X, removing/replacing .kext files, and other solutions.
