Troubleshooting the iPod: Unmounting problems, solution

CNET staff

Some users are experiencing problems with the iPod unmounting when attempting to apply the recently released 1.2.6 updater software. After pressing the Update button, the iPod will unmount from the Desktop, then an error message will appear saying that the Updater could not proceed because the iPod was unmounted.

It now appears that this problem may be caused by the presence of Mac OS X system software on the iPod. The only work-around was to click Restore instead of Update (and then reinstall all the deleted music and software).

Apparently, Apple support is stating that this is not a bug, because installing system software on an iPod was an "unsupported feature." The problem has existed at least since version 1.2.1 of the iPod software, and persists through to the current 1.2.6 release.
