Troubleshooting the Finder: Wrong folder accidentally deleted in column view

CNET staff
We've previously covered what we consider to be serious bugs with the OS X Finder's column view (examples: 1, 2) where users can accidentally -- and quite easily -- delete the wrong file or, more likely, folder. MacFixIt reader Don Montalvo reports on a slightly different variation on this theme -- one that has bitten us here at MacFixIt many times:

    1. Open a Finder window in column view.
    2. Create a new folder (via File -> New Folder or by pressing shift command N). The new folder's name will be selected and editable.
    3. Before editing the folder name, or even while editing it, press command delete to delete the folder.

Since the new folder is currently selected, you would expect the new folder to be deleted. However, Mac OS X instead deletes the enclosing folder.

You can get the enclosing folder back using the Finder's Undo command (via Edit -> Undo or by pressing command Z), but we still consider this to be a significant bug that can (too easily) result in data loss.

UPDATE: A number of readers have pointed out that if you're working with a network share, you can't use Undo to get the folder back -- it's gone for good. (Before the folder is deleted, you get a confirmation dialog, but many users will simply assume that the dialog is for deleting the intended folder.)
