Troubleshooting the 17" iMac: Dim display after sleep

CNET staff

MacFixIt reader Byron Hinson reported his experience with sleep problems from the 2003, 17" iMac, on this Web log. Since his posting we have received a number of similar reports. Hinson describes the problem as follows:

"[...] My iMac went to sleep for a little while as I went out of the house and left it on. When I came back, I clicked on my Apple mouse and expected my Mac to come back to live, well it looked like it was going to - I saw a quick flash of the desktop, and then all I saw was darkness."

"Now I thought at the time, that this was going to be a one (time) problem. Although the screen was (very) dark you could make out the desktop slightly, it was as if the backlight on the flat screen display was not working right. I managed to put my Mac to sleep again automatically as I hoped bringing it back out of sleep would maybe fix the darkness problem... it didn't. "

In summation, a number of users are noticing that when their 17" iMacs are put to sleep for more than 5-10 minutes, the display is dim and virtually unreadable. Restarting the system resumes normal operation.
