Troubleshooting Security Update 11-04-2003: Unmount secondary volumes before installation

CNET staff

Yesterday we reported problems installing the recent Security Update 2003-11-04 (previously available only via Software Update, but now available via this Apple Knowledge Base article). Both reports describe similar symptoms -- an installer crash/quit.

Ed Bedford reports that he was able to work around this problem by unmounting any volumes other than the startup disk before proceeding with installation:

"The update has problems if any drive other than the boot drive is mounted. Once I dragged the other drives to the trash the update proceeded normally. Also it is a good idea to quit all programs except internet connect and software update. The update fails looking for ?other drives?.

"I then rebooted and did repair permissions on the boot drive that took minutes longer than usual 'scanning for permissions' but the boot drive and system now seem quite stable."
